The purpose of the research was to discover the different forming factors of Chinese and English quantifiers. Nouns in English denote individuals, quantification, or wholeness in singular and plural forms, while Chinese quantifies nouns through a combination of “numerals + quantifiers”, such as “一隻羊(a sheep)”. As far as cognitive grammar is concerned, the concept of Chinese quantifier is a noun-based structure, such as the word “a piece of red f paper”, which focuses on the noun “red paper” and the quantifier “a piece” been used for developing the noun. The English quantifier has a conceptual structure around the preposition “of ” to highlight the intrinsic relationship between two objects, such as “a cup of tea”、“a glass of wine”. The differences between Chinese and English in the use of quantifiers are mainly related to language structure, language culture and way of thinking. In short, the concept of “structure” affects the composition of two language quantifiers. It's the main purpose to distinguish and classify the composition of Chinese and English quantifiers under contrastive analysis. |
