Very little attention has been given to studies of the economic nature of cooperation, especially of the role of cooperation in Economic Development, and literature on this subject is rather limited. However, I would like to review some papers and try to explain the philosophy and nature of cooperation and identify roles of cooperatives which may be useful for economic development. In 1967, I was invited by Friedrick Ebert Stiftung (German Foundation) to attend a seminar which was held in Seoul, Korea. The theme of this meeting was 'The Role of Cooperative Movements and Trade Unions in Economic Development'. Three main problems (distribution of income, distribution of wealth and distribution of opportunities) were considered to be the main defects after successful economic development, either in developing or in developed countries. |
