The amount of litterfall and litter layer's decomposition rate of three different stands (namely, natural hardwood stand, NS; secondary hardwood stand, SS; and China-fir plantation stand. CPS) in the Hui-Sun Experimental Forest were monitored from Sept. 1988 to Aug. 1999 by using littertrap and litterbag approaches, respectively. The results showed that the litterfall of CPS (0.8-262.1 g/m2/mo) varied significantly with season. Except in October (which amounts to 262.1 g/m2/mo) and in June the litterfall of CPS was, in general, significantly lower than that of NS and SS through out the year. In October, however, it was higher than both NS and SS whereas in June it was higher than SS but lower than NS. During the study period the amount of litterfall of SS (14.3-160.3 g/m2/mo) was lower than that of NS except for the months of October, May, June and August The litterfall collected from NS varied from 27.1 to 86.4 g/m2/mo and was relatively stable. When estimated on yearly basis the amount of litterfall of NS (6.782.6 kg/ha/yr) was the highest followed by SS (6.658.8 kg/ha/yr) CPS which amounts to 4.512.6 kg/ha/yr was the lowest With respect to the decomposition liner collected from NS showed the highest rate during the initial stage (1998/10-1998/12) which was followed by that collected from SS and CPS. A rather unusual result was observed for the decomposition of liner collected from CPS at 2 months: the weight of litterbag was increasing instead of decreasing. Nevertheless, eight months later, its rate accelerated and was higher than chat of liner samples collected from NS and SS. |
