Insect preys of the Mustela sibirica inhabiting Guandaushi forest ecosystem, the LTER site at central Taiwan, were studied by fecal analysis. Insect fragments could be found in 46 (73%) out of the 63 fecal samples collected in 1997. Among the 33 samples collected in winter, 72.7% have insect fragments inside. Orthoptera was the major insect prey for the weasels. Fragments of Orthoptera could be found in 54.3% of the 46 specimens with insect fragments. In addition to Orthoptera, fragments belonging to six other insect orders were identified among the 27 specimens examined. The percentages of occurrence of these orders were: Coleoptera 44.4%, Dermaptera 22.2%, Hymenoptera 18.5%, Diptera 7.4%, Hemiptera 3.7% and Anoplura 3.7%. Exoskeletal fragments of certain body parts were preserved better and were more easily identified in fecal specimens than those of other body parts. Among the 27 feces of 1997, the percentages of occurrence of fragments of various parts were: Headantenna, 19.8%; mandible, 9.9%; Thorax-legs, 13.2%; wings, 5.0%; and Abdomen- cerci, 12.4%; ovipositors, 9.1%. |
