In sum, a Confucian follower fully realizes that we are all finite human beings, striving to work out the great potentiality given us as an endowment from Heaven. We are in the area of diversity (fenshu), but we aim at unity (liyi) as our regulative idea. In a world full of conflicts and evils, our goal is creative creativity (shengsheng) and comprehensive harmony (hexie). Is this not an impossible goal? We must follow the example of Confucius who is said to be “one who keeps working towards a goal the realization of which he knows to be hopeless.”—Shu-hsien Liu, “Reflections on Globalization from a Neo-Confucian Perspective” (JCP 38:1 [March 2011]: 116) |
