The origin of Baitouweng (Pulsatillae Radix) is the root of Pulsatilla chinensis (Bunge) Regel (Ranunculaceae). In this study, we purchased twenty-five samples of Baitouweng from twenty-five Chinese herbal stores in Taipei area, and eight samples received from pharmaceutical manufactories. Samples were compared with authentic materials to identify their characteristics by morphology and microscopy. The results shown that the twenty-five samples of the Baitouweng were analysed and conformed to the Potentilla chinensis Seringe (委陵菜) and the Polycarpaea corymbosa Lamarck (白鼓釘). The former were of twenty one samples and the latter were of five, respectively. None of the true Baitouweng was purchased from the Chinese herbal stores this time.Among the eight samples obtained from pharmaceutical manufactories, one of them was Pulsatilla chinensis (Bunge) Regel, one of them was Polycarpaea corymbosa Lamarck and six of them were Potentilla chinensis Seringe.According to the results, the adulteration and misusage of Baitouweng in the market are serious. |
