During a period from July 1997 to June 1998, ophthalmic solutions and ointments were randomly sampled from hospitals/clinics of Taiwan by the local health bureaus and the National Laboratories of Foods and Drugs of the Department of Health. These samples including ten ophthalmic ointments and fourty-three ophthalmic solutions were tested to assess the sterile quality of commercial ophthalmic products. The sterility testing was conducted according to the test procedures of membrane filtration as described in the twenty-third edition of United States Pharmacopeia. No growth of bacteria or fungus was observed in the incubation period for all the samples. Our results demonstrated that the ophthalmic products used in Taiwan hospitals meet the acceptable requirements of sterility. |
