The quantity of data centers grows year by year. The power consumptionof IT equipment is huge. Servers are the main equipment of adata center. In this study, a divided zone method is developed to improvethe cooling efficiency for purpose of power saving. The analysis is bysimulation. A divided zone partition can concentrate airflow for keycomponents to avoid airflow bypass for better cooling, even when a FSC(fan speed control) function is already implemented for the system. Thepartition in a 1U server can save 31.0% of the total fan power consumptionand reduce the system airflow rate by 12.9% at 35 degrees Celsius ambient.For a specific load change in the server, the FSC function can save 31.2% of the fan power consumption when the CPU load is decreased from 95 Wto 76 W. Power savings can be enhanced from 31.2% to 46.2% after implementingthe divided zone partition with a FSC function. Obviously,the divided zone partition can introduce extra cooling efficiency to savemore power. |
