Magneto-rheological (MR) fluid is a novel, smart material. MR fluidis composed of dielectric fluids, magnetic micro-particles and surfactants.When an external magnetic field is applied, MR fluid changes fromNewtonian fluid into a Bingham plastic in a few milliseconds, continuously,rapidly, reversibly, and controllably. Therefore, MR dampers are idealsemi-active control elements.In this paper, an MR damper of flow mode was designed. MagnetoV64 software was used to analyze the magnetic circuit and field strengthof the MR damper. The MR fluid was MRF-132DG made by LordCompany. From the results of magnetic circuit analysis and the shearstress characteristics of the MR fluid, we can obtain the relationshipbetween the magnetic field and the yield stress of the MR fluid. Thedynamic equation of the MR damper was built up to analyze the damping characteristics. A flow mode MR damper was fabricated and testedusing a dynamic test rig, and the results were obtained in the form of forcevs. velocity and force vs. displacement plots. The results show that theMR damper of flow mode has good control characteristics and yieldsenergy savings. |
