The purpose of this study is to develop novel vertical alignment (VA)copolymer films for liquid crystal (LC) devices. Negative dielectricanisotropy (N-type) LC, two kinds of acrylic monomer and a photoinitiatorwere mixed in the proper ratio. Only Ultra-Violet (UV) light irradiationwas required to aid the phase separation of the LC mixture to form theupper and lower double layers of a VA copolymer film. Preliminaryelectro-optical properties of the LC molecules under the VA mode, such asoptical transmittance and contrast ratio etc., have been characterized. Theresult of this experiment was discovered under the proper ratio LCmixtures system, the contrast ratio reaching 1300:1. This novel VAtechnology for the liquid crystal displays (LCDs) industry enables theshortening of Polyimide (PI) pre-processing and we hope to use the VAmode to manufacture high contrast ratio LC devices. |
