The main aim of this study is to perform the structural analysis andsearch for the optimum design solution for the latest developed latchstructure for computer connectors under predefined strokes. 3D CADsoftware is used to create a geometric model of the latch component, basedon design rules specified in documents like product requirements andassociation specifications. Commercial finite element software is used toperform the stress analysis. Then, the Taguchi method is used to search forthe optimum solutions of the latch component following the experimentalprocedures. In this study, the four design parameters studied are the strokesof pushing displacement allowed, the height of the curved portions of the Ushape, the length of moment arm, and the thickness of the sheet metal. Anoptimum solution that satisfied the design criteria was generated. A simpleforce-displacement test used in industry is also conducted to verify thesolution. The results show that equivalent stress and volume of latchcomponent for optimal design are decreased by 38% and 36 % respectivelycompared to the original design. |
