This paper investigates design, construction and performance tests of a thin disc piezoelectric clutch mechanism, including a driving frictional member and a driven frictional member. Each member consists of a piezoelectric buzzer and other components. Both the structure of the piezoelectric buzzer and the principle of the piezoelectric clutch are first expressed. Then, patterns of vibration modes in the piezoelectric buzzer are induced by inverse piezoelectric effect, and measured using carbon-powder imaging while the piezoelectric buzzer was driven by AC power. Moreover, the piezoelectric clutch is designed and constructed. Finally, from measured results, effects of amplitudes and frequencies of AC voltages on clutching performance and rotational speeds of the driving and driven shafts in the piezoelectric clutching system are measured, and frictions between contact surfaces of the driving and driven shafts are discussed. |
