Since many GSM network operators have roaming agreements withforeign operators, users can often continue to use their mobile phones whenthey travel to other countries. There are several drawbacks found in existingauthentication protocols of GSM, such as the fact that VLR cannot beauthenticated, unbalanced communication bandwidth consumption betweenVLR and HLR, and storage overhead in VLR. Recently, many authenticationprotocols have been proposed to solve those drawbacks of the existingGSM authentication protocols, but they cannot alleviate all drawbackswithout altering the GSM architecture. In this paper, we propose a novelmutual authentication protocol to solve all of the above problems withoutchanging the existing GSM architecture. |
