This paper is aimed at incorporating a thermal battery (TB) into an aircooled chilling unit to store surplus thermal energy by generating ice underlight-loaded or unloaded conditions and to reclaim the energy by meltingthe stored ice to enhance cooling capability during the peak-load period. Itis shown in this paper that the proposed system can operate at almostfull-load condition despite load fluctuation, which means high efficiencyfor the proposed system. In addition, the pipeline structure of this system issimplified by reducing the number of heat exchangers and hence themaintenance.Experimental results are shown to indicate the advantages of theproposed system. These results show that the system is able to increasecooling capability by 40~60%, transfer approximately one third of the peakpower demand required by an air-conditioning system, and save at least 15.1% of the power fee for 8-hours of operation. Therefore, replacingtraditional air conditioning systems by the proposed system is a solution toeasing the peak load demand during the summer and acquiring economicbenefit. |
