Construction contractors, either general or specialty, often need todecide on the extent of job outsourcing or subcontracting on a project, which typically affects their capital investment in projects and theirprofitability as well. It is imperative that contractors consider all thenecessary factors in order to make proper decisions. Conventionally, decisions are made based on engineering experience and judgment, whichlacks systematic analysis and could lead to inferior results. Therefore, inthis research we aim to develop several decision support models, which areformulated as integer programs, to assist construction contractors indetermining the extent of job outsourcing or subcontracting. Theseprograms are solved using mathematical programming software. Toevaluate these models, we performed case studies using data from realconstruction contractors. The preliminary results are good, showing that themodels could be useful for real practice. |
