“This object should be in the museum! ” which has been interpreted as the object has been old enough to be collected in the museum, however, is it true that museum only collect old objects? And what is the definition of “old”? Life cycles of technological objects turned from the previous 100 years now shortened to 10 years, even less than 10 years. For example, the life cycle of the letterpress printing technology was about 100 years; the CRT TV technology was about 60 years, and the traditional mobile phone technology was only about 15 years. Since the rapid development of modern technologies, science & technology museums are promoting concepts of “collecting science and technology objects for future”, in case missing the timing for collecting technological and social development-related artifacts which might disappear too quickly. This article tried to take the National Science and Technology Museum as an example to discuss that, nowadays, technology museums collect not only historical artifacts, but also objects with meanings and values despite their ages and how to find out their proper timing of collection would be essential. |
