According to the definition of ICOM Statutes, a museum is a non-profit making, permanent institution in the service of society and of its development. Based on the role and mission to serve the society and of its development, visitors have become the main concern for the management of museums. Museums must demonstrate and enhance their accountability through visitor studies. However, due to the shortage of long-term and systematical researches on museum visitors, the value of visitor studies as a powerful tool to demonstrate museum’s effectiveness and to improve museum’s practices is underestimated. This paper first examines the value and development of visitor studies. Then, a conceptual framework of visitor studies and its significance are discussed. |
