IMAX Corporation invented the world’s first 70mm ultra-high quality film projection system and premiered it at the Fuji Pavilion, EXPO '70 in Osaka, Japan. Thirty-five years after its invention, the 70mm giant screen theater has become a standard facility for most major museums and science centers all over the world. In Taiwan, almost 1.5 million people visit the 9 existing theaters each year. The 70mm giant screen theaters have done significant contribution in the public science education. In this article, I will review the invention and evolution of the 70mm film/theater and its development in Taiwan. I will also discuss the influence of some new factors: the pure commercial theaters, the Hollywood involvement, and the DMR technology in the future of the 70mm film industry. |
