Family groups with visiting behaviors different from other visitors continue to be the most common type of museum patrons in many countries. Since the 1970s, museum professionals in western countries have become increasingly interested in the agenda of family visitors and their visiting behaviors, yet they have received little attention and no systematic effort has been made to understand them in Taiwan. To respond to family visitors' various needs, museum practitioners in Taiwan need a better understanding of this large portion of their audience. This paper summarizes research done on families in museums based on the results of several studies both from Taiwan and other countries. Issues regarding characteristics of family groups in museums, the development of family visitor studies, what is known and unknown about family groups in museums are addressed. |
