The relationships between obesity and cognitive impairment in older populations are still unclear. This study aimed to examine this relationship using different methods of assessing weight status in comm unity - dwelling older adults. A cross - sectional survey was conducted with 307 community - dwelling older adults aged 65 or older in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Cognitive impairment was measured by the mini mental state examination (mini - mental state examination). The assessment of weight status included body mass index ( body mass lndex ) , waist circumference ( waist circumference ) , and body fat using bioelectrical Impedance Analysis. Covariates comprised sex, age, educational level, marital status, income, smoking, alcoho l consumption, number of chronic diseases. After multivariable adjustment, multiple logistic regression models revealed that BMI, waist circumference and body fat were not significantly associated with cognitive impairment. Given that it was a cross - sectio nal study with a small smaple, a well - designed prospective study is needed to verify these findings. |
