This study compares the illustrations in various editions of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms from Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is discovered that the images in many editions are rather similar but the interpretation styles and approaches appear different as a result of dissimilar drawing and carving techniques. For this reason, the similarities and differences are defined as key areas of concern. By adopting content analysis to examine the visual elements applied, the following findings are established in this study. The formats, designs and lines of the descriptive illustrations in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms vary as a consequence of the characteristics of each carver's workshop and social circumstances. After the image details are sorted out, it becomes obvious that there are regular patterns in design of the styling and postures of each character to help readers identify its status. |
