The purpose of this study was to understand the developmental trend and research dimensions of self-narrative research approach in various professional fields in Taiwan through inclusively analyzing relevant literatures published from 1994 to 2014. Data were collected from "National Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations in Taiwan" and "PerioPath Index to Taiwan Periodical Literature System." A total of 986 research papers were reviewed and analyzed. The results were as follows: (1) Self-narrative research has rapidly grown in Taiwan. Among approximately 1,000 studies that were published between 1994 and 2014, 90% of them occurred from 2005 to 2014 and more than half of them were published from 2010 to 2015. (2) Most studies came from the professions focusing on interpersonal interactions, such as psychology, social work, and education, or the physical education major which has a unique professional development process. (3) The dimensions of the self-narrative studies can be comprehended from three text sources- "participant/objective others", "researcher", "both researcher and participant/objective others"-and four research focuses-"exploration and construction of participants/objective others' subjectivities", "construction of researcher's subjectivity", "shared experiences and phenomena", and "the transforming process of others-researcher interaction". Discussions and suggestions on the academic value and definition of self-narrative research, as well as the methodology and quality criterion are provided. |
