This study aimed to explore how and what breast cancer patients perceived the reasons and impacts of getting the disease while participating in a counseling group. Data were collected from six women with breast cancer who participated in a non-structured counseling group. The group met once a week for 4 times and each meeting lasted about 6 hours. Research data were gathered from interviewing members and observing the group process by the researcher. An interpretative interaction method of the qualitative research method was employed in this study and the main results included five themes. 1. Lack of awareness of long-term life stress, emotional pressure, and perfectionism characters was perceived as the main causes for their disease. 2. Insights shared by members regarding how to recover from the illness included adopting a healthy pattern of life, living in here and new, choosing positive thinking and creating positive feelings and emotions, and appreciating inspirations from experiencing this disease. 3. Experiencing the disease had impacted their self- identification, emotions and their interactions with families. 4. The group process provided an opportunity for members to increase awareness on how the disease impacts on their personal issues, gives meanings to their disease, and adopts actions for recovery. 5. Instead of being controlled by the disease, members were empowered by taking a lesson from it, experiencing unexpected changeable world and being a true self. Recommends and suggestions for clinical group counseling practice, group leader training, and future researches are discussed |
