Black and Blue (Lan yu hei) , one of Wang Lan’s important anti-communist novels, depicts the lives of Zhang Xing-Ya, Tang Qi, and Zheng Mei-Zhuang during theAnti-Japanese War and Chinese Civil War. In 1966, the Shaw Brothers Studio made itsfilm adaptation, and the film became as popular as its original.Because of different perspectives of creation, the features of the novel and film werenot much alike. On the one hand, the novel was based on the perspective of war, andhad a complex relationship with love; on the other hand, the film, set against the backdropof the wars, was a love film in which emphasized more on “love” and many plotswere left out. Additionally, the political relationships among Taiwan, China, and HongKong during the Cold War, and the tastes of audience at that time are both the factorswhich influenced the adaptation outcome of the film. |
