Yang Kui is a well-known literary author and social movement leaderin Taiwan history. It has been very well known in academic circles thathe led Peasants’ Organization during Japanese occupation. However,under the shadow of White Terror, most past research has avoided thesensitive political taboo of the 2/28 Event so that Yang Kui’s activities inthe early postwar period was unknown.By means of first-hand historical material and the memories of YangKui’s relatives and friends, this essay will draw the outline of Yang Kui’s variety of experiences in the early postwar period, in which he devotedhimself to construct a new Taiwan, led or participated the LiberationCommittee, the New Life Promotion Team, the Livelihood Association,the Taichung City head quarters of the KMT, the Relief Committee ofTaiwanese Revolution Martyrs’ Descendents, as well as The PoliticalConstruction Association. During the period of the 2/28 Event, heresolutely undertook armed revolution. After he was released from jail, hesupported the “Wheat Wave Song Team” – a student democracy society,and drafted the Declaration of Peace. This essay will help us understandhow Yang Kui dealt with the changing postwar situation, restarted, ranafter Taiwan Autonomy, and persisted in Taiwan-oriented culture. |
