During Qing Dynasty, Zhenlan Temple of Dajian town, Taichung City, Nan Yao Temple of Zhanghua city, Tianhou Temple of Lugang town, Zhanghua county, Beigang Temple of YunlinCounty and Grand Tianhou Temple of Tainan City are, among other Mazu temples, the most famous and representative ones, four of which located in the central Taiwan, showing that central Taiwanese important region in Mazu belief.Compared to the most illustrious Zhanglan temple of Dajia town, other coastal Mazu temples in Taichung City are developed rather earlier but less famous now and relatively unpopular.Nevertheless, we cannot ignore that these temples also have potential in the sense of history, ritualceremony and organization, parade escort as well as a lot of historical artifacts which are worthy ofstudy. In view of the aforementioned, this text has two preliminary directions. First, with regards to tangible material, we will focus on the artifacts of these Mazu temple and engage in investigation study with an intention to playing an active role in the historical research by studying the ancient pieces. In addition, we will conduct a fieldwork research by which we hope to describe a more complete picture about the origin and making history of the artifacts from the coastal Mazu temple in Taichung city. Secondly, in Mazu belief, previous studies put an emphasis on some particular Mazu temples, whereas the differentiation between region, belief and history is almost neglected. On the one hand, a more comprehensive description of specific geographical history will be represented; on the other hand, a further discussion will be focused on the regional study of belief group and how the interaction between different Mazu temples and other beliefs turned into a foundation of society. |
