略論方東美先生對華嚴的詮釋──回應屈大成先生

On Thomé H. Fang's Interpretation of Huayan Thought – A Response to Wut Tai Shing's Point of View

本文主要回應屈大成先生〈論方東美對華嚴思想的詮釋〉一文，指出吾人除了要了解方東美先生「如何」闡釋華嚴思想外，更要了解其「為何」如此理解華嚴。這樣才能把討論的層次，由「描述性質」發揮至「解釋性質」。本文以為，方先生正是從其「廣大和諧的哲學」作視域，以討論華嚴思想的利弊。吾人若要探討方先生與華嚴的關係，或可多從這一角度討論問題，以豐富相關論述。

This article mainly responds to Wut Tai Shing's 'On Thomé H. Fang's interpretation of Huayan thought', arguing that in comparison with 'how' did Fang interpret Huayan, 'why' Fang interpreted Huayan in the way he did is more important, which brings the whole discussion from a descriptive level to a more explanatory dimension. This article further argues that Fang interpreted Huayan from his own perspective of 'philosophy of comprehensive harmony', that provides an alternative focus of study about the relationship between Fang and Huayan thought.
