People are gifted with integrity and wisdom conferred by the Way. Being awry from the Way comes as, on the one hand, rotten roots caused by dusty desire in the secular realm, and, on the other hand, the secular realm contaminated by rotten roots as a result of insatiable desire and discrimination. To return to gifted integrity and wisdom conferred by the Way, one will have to head back to rooted nature through cultivation endeavor. The desire in the secular realm came as objective epistemic subject, yet obsession and indulgence led to beauty/ugliness and good/sin discrimination. If, on the one hand, one could grapple with the illusion of the secular realm, then he/she comes to realize that all principles be both existent and nonexistent, reaching the state of existence while realizing the emptiness. On the other hand, one has to have no desire either internally or externally by letting things take their own course without intentions and obsessions. The operational practice is through the endeavor that hollows obsessions out – one has to not only accomplish extreme serenity by hollowing out intentions and thoughts, but also let go of desire and anxiety in order to clear cumulated infatuation and burdens in life, thereby cultivating wisdom and reaching the Way. Building upon the fore-mentioned notes, the cultivation endeavor under Cheng Xuanying's Twofold Mystery Theory reaches the Via Media Way through dual ways that not only come across but also go beyond the existence and non-existence. Yet the Way of the Via Media is by no means the highest state of the Twofold Mystery. To reach such state, one has to take further steps to release the obsession of and reliance on the Via Media Way, allowing for the joint venture of the realm and wisdom, thereby singling out the state of the Twofold Mystery that not only reflects purity via wisdom but also reflects secularism via purity. |
