The purpose of this article is to explain Mou Tsung-san's advanced analysis for Xunzi's perspectives of the Ceremony and Morality as well as to complement the teaching of cultivation of virtues that Mou doesn't mention. Mou interprets Xunzi's perspectives on the basis of its historic background and the whole process of cademic development, which helps to shed light on the political and cultural meanings.Whereas, Mou pays little attention to furthering the teaching of cultivation of virtues extending from the principles of Ceremony and Morality. Xunzi's teaching of cultivation of virtues helps us understand why virtuous gentlemen and saints are capable of practicing Ceremony and Morality. Furthermore, the teaching of cultivation of virtues is actually the main reason that explains why people learn and practice Ceremony and Morality. To sum up, Xunzi's thought of cultivation of virtues has become an essential dimension to make his theory of Ceremony and Morality complete. |
