In the system of The Child and Youth Sexual Exploitation Prevent Act, the life of girls is defined within a specific frame. In this specific frame more problems which behind the problem are difficult to find. However, even if there are problems, social workers cannot help but try to provide their professional service to “save” those girls from sex industry. When those girls are reluctant to change themselves according to this frame, it is inevitable that social workers will feel exhausted and frustrated, thinking that they are not respected, or the girls are difficult to discipline and are stubborn. Christianity provides me another frame to be a social worker working with girls in sex work, as well as a person/ a woman. It allows me to see my own life experience and the girls' in a new way, discovering that we are all in the pursuit of love. The fact that we all experience love and practice love in our daily lives makes our co-existence possible. In order to cross the gap created by this system, in which the girls and I are in the position as cases and a social worker, I have to devote myself, and to be with those girls. I have to stand with them not only with my service, but also to put my feelings and emotions in it. These are things that are hard to be quantified, and therefore feelings and emotion work are hard to be seen as part of the profession of social worker. Furthermore, to devote feelings and emotions is often seen as common, and it is hard to realize that emotion work is also a part of the work. However, the emotion work which based on Christianity is one of the facts that allows me to be closer to those girls who entered into service involuntarily, and to build relationships with them. It is the relationship that makes the development of different experiences possible. |
