The elementary educational system “Public School” in Taiwan was started by the promulgation of the Regulations for Public Schools in Taiwan in 1898, the new teaching method called “Gouin Method” also came into practice. As a result, a series of new textbook (entitled “Kokumin Dokuhon”) for teaching Japanese to the pupils in Taiwan were compiled and published, composed of twelve volumes. Almost at the same time, a series of complementary textbooks on conversation ( entitled “Hanashikata Kyouzai”) were also published. The study of the present paper is focused on the volume one and volume two of the first edition. In order to understand the actual conditions of the teaching of Japanese education at that time, we will analyze the arrangements of the teaching material, conversational situation, grammatical points, the Japanese syllabary, word segmentation, basic vocabulary, teaching methodology and their relation to the contents of “Kokumin Dokuhon.’”. |
