Recognition is the primary step of starting professional services. With the recognition, social work profession can begin to perceive, discuss, and assess the issues of potential service users, and then establish policies and programs. From this pointof view, it is found that Taiwanese Indigenous youth is encountering dual neglect in both youth and Indigenous welfare domains. For starting the understanding of Indigenous Youth, semi-structured interview were used to interview youth workers with a minimumof one year's experience, by the way of snowball sampling method. Sixteen helpers, from 12 social welfare institutions in 5 counties, were interviewed in the end. Initial analysis of this study shows the severity of behavioural and psychological problems among Indigenous youths. These problems can be simultaneously observed in cities and in traditional tribes. The intervieweesreported the impacts of environmental barriers, such as family function, educational competition, community resources, and economic development, on the Indigenous youth. The conflict between tradition and modernity is especially the unavoidable challenge for Indigenous youth. |
