There are many antimicrobial packaging materials available on the market that can keep food fresh. In this study, the antimicrobial SiO2-AITC particles were prepared by drying after absorption of AITC to SiO2. The effects of different drying processes and particles sizes on the release of AITC were investigated. Among three drying processes (-20℃freeze-drying, 35℃vacuum drying and 75℃vacuum drying), the SiO2-AITC particles prepared by the 35℃vacuum drying obtained the highest release of AITC (19.60 ± 0.06 μL/g). Among three particle sizes (44-75 μm, 25-44 μmand <25μm) produced, the smallest SiO2-AITC particles (<25μm) provided the most significant release of AITC (19.60 ± 0.06 μL/g; P<0.05). Furthermore, the <25μm size of the SiO2-AITC particles prepared by the 35℃vacuum drying demonstrated the best release rate of AITC (89%) when stored at high temperature and high relative humidity (38℃, 98% RH) condition on Day 1. The antimicrobial SiO2-AITC particles have the application as packaging materials used for distribution and storage of food products. The release of AITC can inhibit microbial growth and thus extend the shelf-life of foods. |
