Chen Yuan played a prominent part in the transformation of Chinese modern historical studies. Many works have discussed his pioneering exploration into the history of religions in modern China and its great influence. As a Protestant scholar, Chen Yuan produced historical studies that had a very close relationship with Catholic resources, especially those of the Society of Jesus. The friendship between Chen Yuan and many important Chinese Catholics such as Ying Lianzhi, Ma Xiangbo and Xu Zongze greatly facilitated Chen Yuan’s career. This article explores their history and highlights the significance of the Society of Jesus for the Chinese modern discipline of history. On the one hand, Chen Yuan took full advantage of Christian resources in his scholarship; while on the other hand his studies demonstrated a new paradigm for later Chinese historians. Moreover, these works have drawn the serious attention of foreign Sinologists, which demonstrates successful interaction as well as competition between Chinese historians and foreign Sinologists. |
