Family Portrait - From Family Imprint to Art and Design

「家庭合照 -家庭成員」 為本篇論文的起點，是研究者2014年於皇家藝術學院的第一件創作作品。挑戰以Scan概念為創作發想，打破了大家在既定印象中，對於此數位用語Scan的概念。Scan的解釋有：掃描、瀏覽、細看。 本研究運用自我敘說方式來釐清及再詮釋，由記憶痕跡、食物地圖、歷史印記連結家庭肖像，以食物概念闡述主流藝術家的分支-家庭「重製」的概念，透過視框移轉及詮釋循環自我敘說文本，從文本中理解自己的家庭與自己本身，進一步思考，打開了眼界，並暫時忘卻平時的固定框架，交織出自己的空間和社會結構之間的脈絡。 而此作品，以平面靜物影像方式加上非傳統概念表達「家族肖像」，讓觀賞者Scan 掃描、瀏覽、細看對於黃家（我的家人）的家族合照中獨有的詮釋方式。 以最能代表我的家庭日常飲食中的特色黃家味噌湯的材料，取自於我的家中的獨特配方，以此來表達「黃家家族成員」。為烹煮好的黃家特色味噌湯，來傳達黃家成員相聚在一起的「溫暖味道」。 藉由家族文化去思考那些在記憶中的家族印記或甚至新的經驗來擴展個人創作，並去面對那些不同素材的創作的設計展覽，以開拓未來更多元風貌的創意世界。 本研究的創作主題，Love Currency「愛的貨幣」，以一種經驗交換的方式讓觀眾與作品交流，此作品的發想起於個人的故事，並將日常生活中，人們最熟悉的飲食生活，帶入作品。作品以概念、抽象化的方式，探索人與人交流中，每個人對於「價值」的定義。在此系列作品的呈現，是希望讓觀眾將作品視為一種交流溝通的媒介，並根據個人經驗與作品結合。

The staring point for this dissertation was from my work “Family Portrait，’ （ 1) (2 ) . In 2014， it was my first project in Royal College of Art， 5Scan5. At that time， I was trying to challenging myself how I would be able to use an alternative aspect to express my idea of “Scan”. The meaning of “Scan” is to exam an area carefully but quickly， often you are looking for a particular person or thing. This dissertation I have used the narrative method to clarify and interpret the idea of Family Portrait. The narrative starts from the Memory Trace， Food Mapping， and History Imprint， which connect to my idea of Family Portrait. Furthermore， in abstract level， I use food concept- combining different types of food background in order to describe the branch from the mainstream artist. This idea could also convey the important concept of ‘Family Reproduction5. Through my auto-ethnography I have more understanding between my family and myself by standing back to open my horizon and temporarily forget my usual frame (my own space). This development builds up the context between my own space and the social framework. However， in this project， I used still life image in order to use an unusual framework to represent my “Family Portrait”. I would like to show viewers my idea of representing Huang (my surname) family in “Scan” project by using food materials. “Family Portrait” shows the ingredients of my home-style miso soup from our own family receipt， which represents Huang family members. In addition， Huang style’s miso soup indicates my Family Members5 are gathering together as “warm flavour”. In this dissertation， I am going to discuss memory fragments， which contains my family imprint， and new experience. Those memory fragments brought me more inspiration and also have been helping me to explore and develop more ideas in my art creativity field. The development from the dissertation has transferred into my artwork， “Love Currency”. “Love Currency” is a sharing experience， based on my personal story. In my work I use an everyday ordinary method of selecting food set against a value system. This work explores how we can discover ‘value’ within human interaction， in a conceptual way. The pieces presented are intended to relate in some way to the viewer’s own experience in order to provide the agency for conversation.
