Anti-Ro/ SSA and anti- La/ SSB antibodies were examined in 97 patients with systemic iupus erythematosus (SLE). The prevalence of anti- Ro/ SSA and anti-La/ SSB antibodies was 40.2% and 11.4%, respectively. There was an increased incidence of photosensitivity and hypergaitima- globulincmia in patients with anti-Ro/ SSA antibodies in comparison with those without. There was no significant correlation among anti-Ro/ SSA, anti- La/ SSB antibodies, and disease activity. These autoantibodies did not fluctuate with change of SLE activity. The incidence of anti-ds DNA antibodies did not correlate with these autoantibodies. There was a trend of increasing frequency of anti- Ro/ SSA and anti- La/ SSB antibodies in patients with older age of onset. Patients with anti-La/ SSB antibodies had a lower incidence of serious renal disease compared to those without these antibodies or those with anti- Ro/ SSA antibodies. This suggests that anti-La/ SSB antibody may be one of renal protective factors in SLE patients. |
