The British scholar Legge's English translation of the Book of Songs (She-king) was completed in the 1960s. This article is an analysis of Legge's understanding of the Book of Songs based on his annotations. In this paper, I selected 64 poems from “Chou Nan” to “Wei Feng”in Legge's Translation as sample for analysis. The edition that was used is the 1994 edition entitled The Chinese Classics, Vol. IV, The She-king printed by Nantian Publication in Taipei. In this edition, a preface by Legge written in Hongkong in 1871 is included. This book is divided into four parts: Prolegomena, translation, critical and exegetical notes, and copious indexes. This analysis can provide insights on Legge's reading of the Book of Songs. |
