Korean scholars could initiate the Chinese studies with modern academic perspectives only after the Japanese colonial period (1910~1945) and the Korean War (1950~1953). The thought of Xunzi, which had been condemned as heresy by the orthodoxies of Zhu Xi School朱子學 during Choson朝鮮 Dynasty period (1392~1910), also began to receive new attentions by scholars and become the subject of study in Korea since this time. This paper will review Xunzi studies during the last five decades in Korea, dividing the history of the studies into three periods; the 1950s to the 1970s, the 1980s, and the 1990s to 2005. The perspectives and the methods of analysis that Korean scholars had employed will be introduced along with the historical background to clarify the general features of the studies in each period. Through this, I expect to present an introduction of Xunzi studies and a flow of the Chinese studies in Korea after 1950s. |
