Recently the transcendental reading of the Phenomenology of Spirit is quite influential. However, there are at least two types of such a reading. Some scholars regard the Phenomenology of Spirit as transcendental on the ground of the argumentative strategy it employs. Others claim that the Phenomenology of Spirit has a close affinity to Kant’s transcendental idealism with respect to its theoretical composition. This paper examines and criticizes these two patterns of the transcendental reading exemplified by Stewart’s and Pippin’s interpretation respectively. |
