The crisis human beings encounter today, from viewpoint of the philosophy of Yi (the Philosophy of Change), is the tensed relationship between human (jen) and the material (wu). This tension brings about ecological unbalance, the malfunction of nature, the destruction of environment, and the abnormal climates, and so on. These are ail results of human abuse of the environment and over-utilization of natural resources. In other words, it is the material's counterattack to human's recklessness. The Appended Remarks (hsi-tsi) of the Book of Change (yi ching) teaches that exploiting nature for utilization (kai wu cheng wu) should follow the proper way The mistake human beings commit today is the reckless abuse of the material without intention to reservation. This gives rise to the counterattack of nature. This article wishes to point out that human and the material are two molds of the one and same Life; it will be beneficial for both if the two are in peace, disadvantageous if they are in conflict. The aim of this article is to articulate the intimate mutual relation of the two in terms of ordinary understanding in order to remind a correction towards a harmony between human and the material. |
