Most scholars researching the 'comfort women' (wei-an fu) drafted by the Japanese army during the Second World War have tended to rely upon official documents and oral histories. While they have achieved impressive results, a large amount of primary source material was either lost or destroyed. Moreover, documents from the Japanese colonization of Taiwan have yet to be extensively used for the study of 'comfort women'. For the convenience of discussion, I have written a case study that focuses on the period when Japan occupied the Hai-nan islands. In this paper, I attempt to answer the following questions: Why did the Japanese army launch an invasion of China? How did the Japanese army conquer the Hai-nan islands? How did the Japanese zaibatsu help the Japanese army govern Hai-nan? The paper concludes with a comparative study of Hai-nan 'comfort women' and those who served in other war theatres with the Japanese military. |
