This paper will focus on the Chinese culture represented in early French print during the seventeenth century. We try to reveal its introduction to and expansion in the French society and its impact on the Chinese style in art (la chinoiserie) developed in the next centuries. We shall investigate missionaries, and travelers, interpretations of Chinese culture by examing their journals and illustrations. We will not only analyses the early prints and records descriptions, but also consider the social economic background which favored the Chinese fashion of artcrafts, especially under the court of Louis XIV. As a part of serial projects on the Sino-French cultural study from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries, this study explores the early formation of Chinese art in French socety. It contributes to a comprehensive view of the French interpretation of Chinese culture. |
