The debut of Carson McCullers' extraordinary talent was marked by .the appearance of her first novel, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. Published in June, 1940, when she was twenty-three years old, this novel brought McCullers instant fame and widespread critical acclaim. Admittedly, the praise McCullers gained from this book was partly due to the fact that it was her first novel and th.at she was only in her early twenties. But the main reason for the book's success, as a matter of fact, is the artist's outstanding creativity with which she transmits what she refers to as her indigenous vision of the human condition (Mortgaged 263). |
