This paper describes the care of a female domestic violence victim who sought treatment from the emergency department. Nursing care was provided from 16:29 to 20:02 on January 8, 2014. Violence by the patient’s co-habiting partner was triggered by his long-term job instability, debts, and drug addiction. After collecting relevant information through observation, counseling, listening, and physical assessment, the author confirmed that the patient had the problems of acute pain, fear, and ineffective coping skills. Adopting Watson’s Philosophy of Nursing and case counseling, the author provided a confidential and safe nursing environment, assisted the patient in alleviating physical pain, and established a trust-based nursing relationship. The author displayed an objective, empathetic, and caring attitude by accepting the patient’s negative emotions and encouraged her to express her feelings. In addition, the author referred the patient to an appropriate social worker to help her cope with her family issues after the domestic violence, and provided her with domestic violence-related information and social resource intervention. Through nursing intervention, the patient was able to discuss the methods she adopted for alleviating pain and reducing fear, and to propose effective coping measures. This paper can serve as a reference for emergency room nurses when providing nursing care for victims of domestic violence. |
