The authors explore commodification processes associated with the increasing number of marriages between Vietnamese and Taiwanese by analyzing the activities of intermediaries in the two countries. Marriage has traditionally been regarded as a decommodified social process, but in this situation it has become extensively commodified, with all associated activities performed with profit in mind. This highly commercialized system has been constructed by intermediary agents in both countries who have successfully created a cross-border marriage strong market demand for Vietnamese marriage partners in Taiwan. |
