Background Dengue is not only a major public health concern throughout tropical and sub-tropical regions. It is the most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne viral disease in the world. In the last 50 years, incidence has increased 30-fold. The disease has spread to new countries and from urban to rural settings (Figure 2-1). More countries are reporting their first outbreaks. According to WHO statistics, some 50-100 million new infections occur annually in more than 100 countries. Close to 75% of the global population exposed to dengue is in the Asia-Pacific region. In response to this global threat, the WHO released the Global Strategy for Dengue Prevention and Control, 2012 - 2020. Taiwan must heed these strategies as it deals with aneven greater risk of dengue ushered in by climate change, globalization and urbanization. |
