An outbreak of gastroenteritis caused by Norovirus occurred at an acute psychiatric ward in a regional hospital in June 2006. Diarrhea or fever developed in 52 persons. Among them, 50 were patients and 2 were health care workers. Norovirus was detected in 17 specimens from 32 stool samples which were sent to Center of Disease Control, Taiwan. The positive rate was 53.1%. We describe the epidemiological Features, investigation and control of This Norovirus outbreak. During the investigation, we found: (1)early detection, early report, effective isolation and find out pathogen remain the basic principles of outbreak control. (2)asymptomaic subjects were not equal to no Norovirus infection. All residents including health care workers in ward should be enrolled in infection control programs in order to control the outbreak effectively. (Infect Control J 2009;19:362-9). |
