Between December 23, 2006 and January 3, 2007, there was an outbreak of enterocolitis in a regional hospital affiliated nursing home. There were totally 43 people who had the symptoms as diarrhea, vomiting, or fever; 35 of them were residents and 8 were health care workers. The infection control team had been informed on Dec. 29, 2006 and started the intervention and investigation. The fresh stool and anal swab from 18 of the• 43 suspected cases were collected and sent to the Center of Disease Control, Taiwan. 12 of the 18 samples had been confirmed as Norovirus infection by enzyme-link immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The suspected cases and contact cases had been cohorted. Contact precaution and hand hygiene had been emphasized among the healthcare workers and visitors, especially before and after tube feeding. All the symptoms and signs of the patients were self-limited and there were no mortality case. The outbreak was under control after Jan. 3, 2007. (Infect Control J 2009;19:273-82). |
