Collection, research, exhibition and education are the four functions of a museum. Collection lies at the heart of a museum because it is the core, foundation as well as guide of a museum. Famous museums are usually known for their impressive collections and they usually have their own storage to store their collections. Hence, storage is very important for a museum for both museum's function and its building. Generally speaking, a preservation or service perspective of storage planning is well known among storage planning literatures. However, such perspective neglects the foundation of collection, i.e. why do we collect? What do we collect and how do we collect? These issues are closely related to the planning of storage. As a result, this article illustrates the collection operation management system perspective regarding collection storage planning. It first describes the collection operation management system, which consists of the mission statement or purpose of a museum, collection policy as well as collection procedure. Then, following collection operation management system, storage planning is discussed, which includes: 1 whether or not a museum needs to establish a storage, 2 what kind of storage and how much collection space is needed, and 3 how one should plan collection spaces in a storage according to the needs of collections. |
