This article interprets from a feminist-theological perspective the teaching of marriage in the Bible. Following the order of OT - NT, it attempts to unveil the biblical teaching on marriage, and the actual situation of marriage in the biblical society as well. In the Old Testament, a typically patriarchal world, marriage was oriented to procreation, to family, and to man. At that time, divorce was something not unusual. Jesus, aiming at protecting woman, was of the opinion that what God has joined together, let not man put asunder. During the process of transmission, this statement of Jesus has been differently applied. Our opinion is that Jesus’ word on divorce is a word “in the context”; it is not a timeless principle. Therefore, to understand its context, i.e., its original spirit, is more important than literally transmitting its letter. |
